“The Development of Motivational Interviewing in Estonia and All Over the World”

For its 7th year, EMITA conference will bring to Estonia MI practitioners from all over the world as it is held together with annual MINT Forum (international network of MI trainers). This offers possibilities to hear about the development of the MI method from one of its founders, Professor William R. Miller.

Different workshops that deepen the understanding about the spirit of MI and the possible uses of MI in our practices will be presented by experienced practitioners from different countries.

Our one-day conference welcomes all who are interested in knowing more about MI. More specifically counselors, therapists, healthcare professionals, social workers, trainers, corrections specialists and all others who feel that their work is connected to supporting people during different changes in their lives.

“Why Does Motivational Interviewing Cross Cultures Well?”

William R. Miller

… have a remarkable ability to cross cultures on its own.  It is being taught and practiced in at least 54 languages on six continents.  Over a thousand clinical trials have appeared from dozens of countries across multiple fields including medicine, behavioral health, dentistry, social work, corrections, and education.  What is it about MI that applies in such a broad array of very different nations and cultures?  Dr. Miller, who first described this method in 1983, will propose some answers to the puzzle.

“Before You Even Walk in the Room: Cultivating the Compassionate Mind as Part of the MI Spirit”

Stan Steindl

a number of key qualities that the MI practitioner develops to create a relationship context that becomes something of a foundation for all that might happen next in conversations about change. Originally, the MI Spirit was defined as collaboration/partnershipacceptance/respect, and evocation. However, in the most recent edition of Motivational Interviewing by Miller and Rollnick (2013), a fourth component of the spirit was introduced: compassion. It could be argued that the three original qualities of the spirit are largely behavioural: the MI practitioner tries to act in ways that are partnering, accepting and evocative during the conversation. In contrast, compassion is often considered to be a motivation, a state of mind or way of being, that the MI practitioner may consider, activate and cultivate within themselves outside of the consultation room or workplace, creating for themselves a compassionate mind that can be brought to many areas of their life, including their practice of motivational interviewing. This workshop will offer a brief introduction to the science of compassion and how that might relate to compassion in the MI Spirit, as well as experiential strategies to cultivate the compassionate mind, and bring these ideas and strategies to motivational interviewing practice.

“Using MI to support autonomy across cultures and contexts”

Fiona McMaster

… different cultural and professional contexts. There is a strong and growing body of research to indicate why it is successful, but beyond that, there are countless individuals who have personally experienced the power of this technique as a way to demonstrate good practice in may different professional roles.

In this workshop, Dr McMaster will talk about the importance of supporting autonomy with individuals, and will provide models and practice for working with individuals in a MI-consistent and autonomy-supportive way. For this workshop, we will use examples from multiple work contexts, including medical practice, nursing care, allied health professions, education professions (primary school through to higher education), social work, and also in business. Participants should be prepared to share their experiences, and enjoy an immersive workshop where there will be chances to talk, to learn and to experiment with new techniques.

14.15 – 14.30 Coffee break

14.30 – 16.00 II break- up workshops

“MI tervisekäitumises: diabeedist dieedini”

Ruth Kalda

Töötuba on eesti keeles.

“MI in Leadership and Organisations (MILO)”

Pernille Koch Erichsen

Jennifer Frey

…  and how this approach can help create more psychological safety in organizations. In the workshop there will be shared a couple of hands-on cases and templates, and there will be time to have dialogues and share experiences with MI in leadership and organisations among the participants.

” Motivational Interviewing in the Treatment of Social Anxiety”

Margo Bristow

… They isolate and have incredible fear of any new social situation. The use of MI and additionally teaching our clients how to utilize the basic techniques of reflective listening and summarization in social situations can increase their comfort and decrease the experience of social overload or anxiety. This presentation will address case examples and some basic techniques in practical application.
